Emily Cooley Memorial Award and Lectureship

Nominate a Candidate for a Memorial Award

This award began as a lectureship in 1963 and was designated as a Memorial Award in 1983. The person who receives this award shall have demonstrated teaching ability and shall have made a major contribution to the field of transfusion medicine or biotherapies. Acceptance of the award requires attendance at the AABB Annual Meeting and the presentation of a lecture.

The recipient will receive a $5,000 honorarium. The Emily Cooley Memorial Award and Lectureship is presented annually and the recipient is chosen one year in advance. This award is funded through an endowment from Vitalant.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, candidates:

  • Need not be a member of AABB.
  • Must demonstrate outstanding scientific and teaching contributions to the field of transfusion medicine or biotherapies.
  • Must be able to attend the AABB Annual Meeting and present an educational lecture.

Selection

Recipient is selected by the Emily Colley Memorial Award review and selection team of leaders and experts, appointed by the AABB Awards Committee. Final candidate approved by the AABB Board of Directors.

2024 Recipient

Citation:

In recognition of her scientific achievements and her unwavering support and efforts in mentoring the next generation of transfusion medicine leaders. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Josephson’s work led to critical advancements in pediatric care. Her research was instrumental in discovering that necrotizing enterocolitis is associated with anemia, which provided critical evidence that RBC transfusion is safe in most instances for preterm infants.
