We are familiar with DNA testing centers and want to share some thoughts on testing laboratories in general. Few people give the testing labs much thought however lab work is vital to keeping society safe and healthy. Everything from air quality to fuel to DNA and food science, gets tested in tens of thousands of laboratories across America each day.

If you ever use dietary supplements or vitamins a lab has tested the products for quality, composition, shelf life and strength. Researchers look for evidence of pesticide residue, the presence of heavy metals and other contaminants. They verify the accuracy of the label and test the nutritional facts. Labs that test these nutraceuticals have proficiency in components such as chamomile, L-Carnitine, Creatine, Chondrotin and Saw Palmetto among dozens of other ingredients.

Another area of testing is environmental. Within the past year a study showing that pharmaceuticals are appearing in the drinking water supply gained a lot of attention. This was all the result of laboratory tests done on reservoirs that showed the pervasiveness of prescription drugs entering the aquifer.

Asbestos, soil, mold identification and classification and hazardous waste testing are all done by laboratories. Findings in these areas can affect governments and the quality of life for citizens.

Consumer products face a battery of tests in laboratories. Packaging analysis, physical properties, accelerated aging and the substantiation of claims all must be tested in products like toys, pet food, baby products, cleaning products, furniture, light bulbs, paint, hardware and housewares. Test results can often prompt a recall of an unsafe product.

Every time you gas up your car or board a plane, the fuel for your trip has been tested in a lab. Scientists make sure the formula for products like ethanol are following government guidelines. Emerging technologies such as biomass material must be tested, as are biodiesel products.

One cannot get through a single day without coming into contact with countless products that have passed through testing laboratories at one time or another. This description is offered for your own interest. Refer to our Terms of Service policy.
